Halloween jam jar pumpkins

A quick idea to make with the little ones.
Decorate jam jars with orange tissue paper and PVA. When dry cut shapes from black paper and stick on to create spooky faces. Much cheaper than buying pumpkins, a lot less mess and you can reuse them every year! To make it extra safe you could use plastic jars and battery powered candles.

How to make Fabric storage bins.

Just thought I'd quickly share this fabric storage bin I made for my littlest. I love having extra storage in the playroom but with my littlest learning to walk I'm less keen on boxes and other things he can hurt himself on. So I made this fabric bin. It worked so well I'm definitely going to make more and the good thing about them is it is do easy to scale up the idea.

Still life sketchbook - reflections

These are drawing and prints from my still life sketch book on reflections. I approached the theme in two ways looking a still life objects and surfaces that were reflective and using reflective materials and techniques in my work. As you can see the work evolves greatly as the sketchbook develops and by the end I have created a series of screen print ideas that are very far removed from my initial starting points.

How to make your own exploding volcano

This was from our 'fortunately the milk' project and I must say if you don't mind the smell of vinegar for a bit it's well worth doing as kids love it.

You will need:
  • a small pot,
  • a tray,
  • some playdough,
  • 100ml of white vinegar coloured red with food colouring
  • two teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda.

Mould your playdough around the small pot to create a volcano shape and place on your tray.

We added dinosaurs to our tray, Professor Stegs friends are about to meet a horrible end!

Place two teaspoons of bicarb in the pot.

Pour on the vinegar

Watch the volcano erupt and bring an end to the dinosaur population.

Open a window or do this outdoors as the vinegar reaction can be a bit smelly.

Spoonflower fabric of the week - Blue fish, orange fish

Blue fish, orange fish is now available in my spoonflower shop. Inspired by studies in the aquarium these fish were created using tissue collage and pen and ink. This gives them a lively and water distorted look. Perfect for any fishy friend.

Card making

You may have read in my earlier post this week that I got a new job as a handmade wedding tutor. I also was appointed as a general cardmaking tutor and just thought I quickly show you some the cards I took to the interview with me. I tried to show as much of a range of style and techniques as I could. I wont go into loads of detail about how each card was made, I'll just leave the pictures to do the talking. I will promise to post some card making tutorials soon.

Wedding cards

I have just been appointed as a new handmade wedding tutor this is a new and very exciting role for me and I have really enjoyed making these sample cards. I was asked to bring some examples of cards that could be made on a limited budget but still were classic. These are a few of the pieces I made.
This card was made using brown packing paper, a rubber stamp, rub on letters and a few pearl beads. I attached the design to cream cardstock.
This card was made using brown packing paper that I scrunched first. Some wooden letters and two metal and pearl heart beads stitched on. I then attached the design to white card stock.
Close up of the LOVE card.
This card I made using a piece of embossed paper that I embossed on my sizzix machine, a band of caramel ribbon, a sticker and a organza rose which I finished with seed beads. This I then attached to white card stock.
Close up of the Congratulations card
The organza rose I made myself and will post a tutorial on how to make and use these pretty flowers.

Football cupcakes

Football cupcakes
I have been meaning to post this pictures for ages, but lost them all in a sea of files on my computer. I jyst found them again this morning so I thought I would pop them on now. I made these for my stepdads birthday at the height of world cup fever. He is football mad and when I saw these cupcake decorations in the shop I just knew I had to make him a set for his birthday.

I particularly liked serving them in pairs as then the boot was kicking the ball (and you got to eat two).
