Rainbow rice - sensory play

Sensory play was something I hadn't heard of until I had my youngest. Of course my eldest had played with the sandpit and had done water play but he hadn't explored them in a way that really stimulated him. My youngest on the other had has really enjoyed sensory play and one of his most favorite activities is rice.
I have found it very easy to colour and recently we have taken to using it to explore a rainbow of colours.

By grouping objects that match the colour rice we have created some very stimulating play having unusual combinations of toys and cookery equipment means both him and myself have been more challenged in how we interacted with them

This is definitely an activity we will come back to time and time again.

The only part of out rainbow yet to be completed is blue /purple as I have found these harder to dye the rice and have always ended up with a grey colour.

To dye rice for play activities:

You will need;
1 cup of rice
1 tbsp of white vinegar
couple of drops of food coloring (I like the gel ones best as they give a stronger colour)

Place the ingredients in a large seal able plastic box.
Place the lid on firmly and shake until all the rice is well coated.
Tip out on to a couple of baking trays and spread out.
Leave to dry overnight - the vinegar smell disappears!
