Living with Coeliac disease two years on


On the 13th of May I will celebrate two years of being a coeliac. You might think it’s not something to celebrate, but after nearly twenty years of poor health. My journey of recovery with an understanding of my body is worth raising a glass to.

I haven’t always felt like this, when I was first told I possibly had the disease and then later the gastroenterologist confirmed it. I was bereft. I felt like I was surrounded by the foods I could no longer eat, I emptied my cupboards and looked back at bare spaces.

Every time I walked down the high street, past a bakers I sighed. Every time I watched food adverts on T.V I felt as if I was being taunted.

Slowly, however I started to recover and with that my mind set changed. I am happy now I’ve learnt more about how to cook for myself, my cake baking has become even better than before. I also learnt a lot of coping strategies that help me get through day to day life.































1.       Never be without a snack in your bag, I’ve been to, too many parties now when I haven’t been able to eat a thing.

2.       Never underestimate the comfort of a stretchy waistband.

3.       Wear gloves when playing playdough with the kids. I’ve been caught out with it under my nails before.

4.       Check that people really understand when you say are a coeliac. Most of them don’t, unfortunately.

5.       Take care of yourself, this one I’m still working on. I try and eat the best I can, try and rest when I need to and try to exercise when I can.

Over this past two years, I’ve had to go through both children being tested, thankfully they don’t have it. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, when people say they might go gluten free. I want to shout WHY? Why would you give up something you don’t have to!

·         It’s not good to be on eliminating diets

·         It’s way more expensive

·         Gluten pizza, doughnuts and puff pastry are so much better!

  1. While I have a few friends and coworkers who are celiac or gluten sensitive I really have no idea what that means. I want to say good for you for taking charge of your life. I would be daunted by that diagnosis. I can't imagine the daily struggle it must be. Keep up the good (hard) work!

  2. Being a coeliac is tough.....although I am not entirely gluten free we eat a lot of gluten free products are you're right they are just not as good. I would never have thought about the play dough!!! Thanks for linking up to #coolmumclub with this x
