I love jewellery, it’s the perfect way to finish off an outfit. My favourite pieces to wear are earrings and Necklaces. I find bracelets often get in the way of things. I have admired the work of Made By Miss M for a good while now, after first seeing her work on twitter. So I was delighted when she agreed to take part in my creative corner series.
1. Introduce yourself.
I’m Marketa and I’m the face and hands behind Made By Miss M. I live in north London with my partner Jason and a newly adopted cat Duchess.
2. Tell us a bit about Made by Miss M.
Made By Miss M is a one woman show. I make earrings and necklaces. I craft them because I love them and I enjoy when other people love them too.
3. What made you start your own business?
I’ve always loved earrings. As far as I can remember I’ve always worn them. The bigger the better! I believe that jewellery is extremely personal. And after I couldn’t find what I really loved when it came to earrings and other pieces I decided that I would try to make them! And after making jewellery for a while I gave it a go and started selling them.
4. Did you have any formal training or are you self-taught?
Completely self-taught. Trial and error. Hit and miss.
5. Explain your creative process.
I’m a very visual person. My life is a big colourful picture and my brain is always on fire with new ideas for earrings and necklaces. I can’t sketch, it all just stays in my head until it gets out on my beading mat. I love experimenting with colours, materials and different healing stones. Despite being very methodical and organised in my life I’m quite a messy beader! I call it a beautiful mess – that’s my creative process.
6. Describe your typical day.
I work full time and my job is quite intense and full on. My work pattern is one week 9 – 5 and other 11:30 – 7:30. On my late weeks I also like to go for a run in the mornings. I usually work on Miss M during my days off and during my commute. My commute is filled with social media catch ups. I deal with new orders in the evenings and I prefer to ship them as soon as possible.
7. What’s your biggest seller?
It’s a tie between my Zodiac collection and Baltic Amber collection. They’re really popular, especially necklaces.
CREATIVECORNER15OFF – 15% off on orders over £5 in Made by Miss M shop (until 31/10/18)
8. What have been the high and low points of running Made by Miss M?
High: every time when I sell a piece it still feels very incredible that somebody buys my stuff!!! It makes me so happy. When people leave a lovely feedback I’m over the moon, I can’t even describe it. It will never stop astonishing me that I can make something that others love and wear.
Low: social media – I still can’t get my head around them. They’re time consuming and take so much of my energy.
9. What would be your top tips for running your own creative business?
Don’t compare yourself to others. No matter how much you want to, no matter how tempting – don’t! Each business is different and individual. Our circumstances are unique and one-of-a-kind. Stay patient and keep going. Quitting is not an option.
10. What are your aspirations for Made by Miss M?
I’d love if Miss M could become my main source of income and my full time job. I’d love it to grow into something bigger and amazing.
11. Where can we find you?
